Weekly FA from Dauntless Indies: Magen McMinimy

– What inspired you to write your first novel?

A: I remember I finished reading a Richelle Mead book and while I loved it, I started thinking about what direction I might have taken the book. After that I found myself thinking about writing something of my own. One day after devouring a couple great series I decided to quit pondering and try my hand at writing.

– Whom would you consider a writing mentor(s)?

A: I don’t know that I have an actual writing mentor, but I’ve met a lot of great authors who are all very supportive and helpful.

– What book(s) are you reading now?

A:The Gathering by S.L Dearing and yes I am loving it. Dearing has so many great elements in this book that each page has something amazing happening on it.

– Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?

A: There are certainly some great new (to me) authors that I am fairly obsessed with. For starters I am in love with everything Elizabeth Naughton and everything she’s done in her Eternal  Guardian Series.  I adore Rene Folsom, S.L. Dearing, Jason Brant, Jon Messenger, Brandy L Rivers, Michael Loring and those are just a few.

– What are your current writing projects?

A: I am busting my butt to get Immortal Promise,  the third book in my Immortal Heart Series finished. I have a list of projects that will follow after that.

– What would we find you doing when you’re not at the keyboard?

A: Oh, there is a pretty good chance you find me reading, I know that is super surprising! If I’m not reading or writing then I am probably in the kitchen, I love to cook and bake,

– What are your favorite setting(s) to read/write about?

A: Well I am a paranormal junkie and I enjoy the darker settings… I love to write elements of the past into my books.  I am always excited when paranormal books bring in pieces of history and foreign places like Russia, Italy, Egypt really any country with a rich back story.

– If you could be any character in your book(s), which would you be and why?

A: Ah crap, I hate this question. Because there are a few I would like to be… so I am going to cheat 🙂

In my Half-Blood Princess series I would choose to be either Sophia or Bryn. Both super cool strong woman… and I love their men!

In the Immortal Heart Series I would want to be Izzy. She is still hands down my favorite female of the series so far.

In my North American Pack Series it would of course me Savannah. The fiery, feisty Alpha wolf.

-How many books have you written? This can include both published and unpublished works. Describe each of them in 1-2 sentences apiece (if published, feel free to include the links as well).

A: Wow this could take some time. I have written a total of 19 books that includes short stories, Novellas, Novels and 2 books that were published under a pen name. Since it’s a long list I will just tell you about the series the books fall under.

Half-Blood Princess: This series centers around Sophia, the half human daughter of the original vampire. She finds herself in the small town of Maldera Springs where she comes across and ancient secret that has been hidden from her family for years. She makes some great friends meets some new vampires, enlist a voodoo princess to help her, calls upon some witches, fights with some werewolves falls in love, breaks some hearts and finds her destiny. All within this 8 book series and bonus Novella.

North American Pack Series: this series is a spin off the Half-Blood Princess series. It follows Andre and Savannah in the Montana faction of the North American Pack. Andre is part vampire part witch and Savannah is a feisty alpha female wolf who. Andre and Savannah butt heads as magic penetrates the pack and forces them to find common ground.  The Wolves have a deep seeded hate for Vampires. Hate  that spans generations.

North American Pack books:

Primal Hunger

Primal Calling

Immortal Heart Series: This series follows 5 very sexy Elite Fae warriors, Bain, Kale, Lothar, Uriah, and Cree who are bound to protect the human race from the Dark Fae. Each has a unique power and are full of personality. This series takes place between three different realms, the Human World, the Middle World and the Underworld. This series is super fun  to write as I am able to bring in so many different and interesting creatures… I think that’s what makes it fun to read too.

Immortal Heart books:

Immortal Blood

Immortal Craving

Immortal Promise (coming soon)

Ok then I have two short stories that are featured in Anthologies one is I am Serna in the Paranormal Anthology with a Twist.  And Immortal Luck in the Stalkers Anthology.

And finally I have two books in a YA series that are sitting on mu computer waiting for me to show them some love.

Since that would be a lot of links to post here is my Amazon and Goodreads links 🙂

-Tell me a little bit about your current WIP.

A: Well I just finished Immortal Promise which is about Lothar and Holly and might possibly be my favorite in the series so far. This book took off in a whole new direction. One I hadn’t planned for but that I am super excited to share. It pulled in some mythological elements which I absolutely love.

My next project might very well be the first in my YA series or might have to jump right into Uriah story.

-What does writing preparation look like for you? Do you do full outlines and character profiles, or do you just start with a general idea and write?

A: I am so not an organized writer. Most of my books are built around one scene.  I have learned to at least write up a quick profile for each character in my books, but beyond that I just sit down and let the characters build the story.

-Editing is a challenge for many writers. Give us some of your tips for editing efficiently and well.

A: LOL, I have none, no lie I am not a grammar guru. I don’t want to focus on the grammar part of writing I want to focus on the story its self and more importantly the characters. The one thing I can say and some of you won’t like this… No matter how good you are at “self-editing” or how amazing your friend is at proofreading, invest in yourself and your book and hire a professional editor… I know, I suck and you don’t want to hear this, but it was a hard lesson learned in my career as a writer.

-Research is another challenge writers face, but is an important part of the writing process. What are some of your research tips?

A: While research is very important don’t get bogged down by the small detail (this goes for fiction!) make sure your major facts are right but remember your reader isn’t looking for a history lesson or a fifteen page description of the outside of the medieval castle your character is visiting. They picked up your book to read YOUR story and about your characters. And for you paranormal writers… if you want to mix it up… then do it, if you want your vampires to sparkle then let them shine, just stand behind it 😉

-if you have been published (self or traditionally), what type of marketing did you find worked the best for you? What was the least helpful?

A: Wow I am still trying to figure this out… Do you know the answer? Will you fill me in?

-What genre do you write in? What are some of the challenges to writing this particular genre well?

A: I write mostly Paranormal Romances. I think the most important thing is that you are different, that there is something unique about your characters, setting and plot.

-What advice would you give to a writer who is starting out?

A: Write what you love to read, enjoy the process and make sure you have a core group of people that you trust to help you.

-What are your writing, editing, marketing, and research goals for 2014?

A:Well, I plan to finish out my Immortal Heart Series, I hope to get at least the first book in my YA series published and I am working on the full length novel that follows my short I am Serna. Those are all I am really thinking about right now.

-Pretend I am from a publishing house and you are looking for me to take on one of your books. Pitch it to me in 1-2 paragraphs.

A: Oh I hate the whole pitch thing lol

Bain is an arrogant playboy and an Immortal Light Fae Warrior who fights for the safety of the human race while remaining something of myth. After following  one of the Darks worst human feeding Fae, Bain finds Zander has added another victim to his ever growing list. The Dark Fae Luck Eater has found something enticing in Isabelle’s humanity. Thrust into a world of danger, Isabelle has no idea what is in store for her as the Light and Dark Fae fight over her future.

Immortal Blood is a fast paced adventure into the Fae world. With sexy warriors, feisty heroines and a world full of amazing creatures.
